One thing we sometimes forget when reading or studying hadith is that the chains of narrations are not just the Islamic equivalent of a citation. They represent a living transmission of knowledge, words passed directly from one person to another. These 40 ahadith are unique in that they are not just passed from teacher to student but also from father to son. The following 40 narrations are words passed from a sahabi to his son. While narrations were often taught in specific hadith circles, these narrations are just as likely to have been passed from father to son as a teaching point to something going on in the son’s life. These narrations show the importance the sahabah placed not just in the physical upbringing of their sons but also in their spiritual welfare:
وَحَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الأَيْلِيُّ، – وَاللَّفْظُ لَهُ – قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ “ مَنْ فَاتَتْهُ الْعَصْرُ فَكَأَنَّمَا وُتِرَ أَهْلَهُ وَمَالَهُ ” .
Salim ibn Abdullah relates on the authority of his father that the Prophet ﷺ said, “He who missed his afternoon prayer it is as though he was deprived of his family and property.” (Sahih Muslim)
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، وَابْنُ، نُمَيْرٍ قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرٌو، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ يُصَلِّي بَعْدَ الْجُمُعَةِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ .
Salim narrated on the authority of his father that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to observe two rak’ahs after Jumu’a. (Sahih Muslim)
حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ، وَابْنُ، نُمَيْرٍ قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنِ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ سَبْرَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى عَنْ نِكَاحِ الْمُتْعَةِ .
Rabi’ b. Sabra reported on the authority of his father that Allah’s Apostle ﷺ prohibited the contracting of temporary marriage. (Sahih Muslim)
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا الثَّقَفِيُّ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ، اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى أَنْ يُتَنَفَّسَ فِي الإِنَاءِ .
Abu Qatada reported on the authority of his father that Allah’s Apostle ﷺ forbade breathing in a vessel. (Sahih Muslim)
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدٌ، – يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَلَمَةَ – عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبَّاسُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ لِعَاصِمِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ “ أَمْسِكِ الْمَرْأَةَ عِنْدَكَ حَتَّى تَلِدَ ” .
‘Abbas bin Sahl reported on the authority of his father that the Prophet (ﷺ) said to ‘Asim bin ‘Adl. “Keep the [pregnant] woman [i.e. after divorce] with you until she gives birth.” (Abu Dawud)
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَعَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ، وَزُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، سَمِعَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم رَجُلاً يَعِظُ أَخَاهُ فِي الْحَيَاءِ فَقَالَ “ الْحَيَاءُ مِنَ الإِيمَانِ ” .
Salim reported on the authority of his father that the Prophet ﷺ heard a man censuring his brother regarding modesty. Upon this the Prophet ﷺ remarked: Modesty is part of Iman (faith). (Sahih Muslim)
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، بْنِ سَعْدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَأْكُلُ بِثَلاَثِ أَصَابِعَ وَيَلْعَقُ يَدَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَمْسَحَهَا .
Ibn Ka’b b. Malik reported on the authority of his father that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to eat (food) with three fingers and he licked his hand before wiping it (with towel). (Sahih Muslim)
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بُرْدَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ “ مَنْ مَرَّ فِي شَىْءٍ مِنْ مَسَاجِدِنَا أَوْ أَسْوَاقِنَا بِنَبْلٍ، فَلْيَأْخُذْ عَلَى نِصَالِهَا، لاَ يَعْقِرْ بِكَفِّهِ مُسْلِمًا ”.
Narrated Abu Burda bin `Abdullah on the authority of his father that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Whoever passes through our mosques or markets with arrows should hold them by their heads lest he should injure a Muslim.” (Sahih Bukhari)
وعن عمرو بن شعيب عن أبيه عن جده رضى الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: ”لا يحل لرجل أن يفرق بين اثنين إلا بإذنهما” . وفى رواية لأبى داود: ”لا يجلس بين رجلين إلا بإذنهما”.
Amr bin Shu’aib narrates on the the authority of his father on the authority of his grandfather that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “It is not permissible for a person to sit between two people without their permission.” (Sunan Tirmidhi)
حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، يَبْلُغُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ “ لاَ يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ قَاطِعُ رَحِمٍ ” .
Jubair bin Mut’im reported on the authority of his father that the Prophet(ﷺ) said: “Anyone who cuts off relationship from his nearest relatives will not enter Paradise.” (Sunan Abu Dawud)
